A direct train connection between Antwerp-Hamont-Weert is high on the wish list for businesses and governments. The line between Mol and Hamont on the Belgian side of the border has already been electrified. To extend the rail service to the Dutch side of the border between Hamont and Weert, several infrastructure interventions will be needed, including electrification.

The Province of Limburg and the City of Weert have set aside funding for electrification, and the parties are discussing further financing with the ministry. Traveller’s association vTv recently submitted a petition to speed up the work, and specifically referred to the CO2 reduction of almost 10 million kilogrammes per year. This connection will bring the Belgian port city closer to the border region.
